Talent84 is delighted to be representing our client; a specialist engineering business arm of a larger regional group, in their search for a Mechanical Design Engineer based in South Tyneside.


About the Role

Reporting to the Design Office Manager, the Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for generating designs, R&D, NPD as well as associated documentation in support of pre and post customer contracts.


Main Responsibilities

  • Undertaking conceptual design work in support of tenders, and detail design work for contracts and new product development.
  • Producing and managing models and engineering drawings within the Company’s CAD systems.
  • Utilizing the Company’s component databases to promote the reuse of existing designs.
  • Performing performance calculations using the Company’s suite of software.
  • Performing structural strength of materials calculations to support designs.
  • Participating in design review meetings.
  • Liaising with other departments, customers and suppliers in support of the above.
  • Preparing a list of parts that forms the skeleton for the Bill of Materials.
  • Generating and transferring the required departmental design documentation deliverables.
  • Maintaining component part records in the company database systems and other documents required by business quality system processes.
  • Always seeking to propose the most cost effective design.

About you

To be considered for the role, it is essential that you possess demonstrable experience gained as a design engineer or draughtsman in a mechanical engineering setting (E.g an experienced designer of cast, fabricated and machine components of varying size) and demonstrable knowledge on material strength. You will be time-served as a minimum in an appropriate discipline.

 

Key selection criteria

  • Minimum of an HNC or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering ( or related subject)
  • Experienced user of 3D & 2D Design packages (Creo/Pro-Engineer preferred)
  • Experience of designing castings, fabrications and precision machined, close toleranced, turned and milled components.
  • High attention to detail
  • Skilled in the application of ISO limits and fits.
  • Familiarity with cast, fabricated and precision machined components.
  • Time management, problem solving and organisational skills.
  • Posses the ability to work under their own initiative and capable of organising their work efficiently and effectively to achieve target deadlines.
  • Has an enthusiastic manner along with a willingness to learn and propose new improvement ideas.
